This time around we are going over one bounce throws from infielders to first baseman or hard one hop line drives to infielders.
This week I will do a second fielding tip. This is for first baseman, but can help all infielders. I will first talk about the one-hop throws from the infielders. The way I like to try and scoop the ball in the dirt is somewhat different than the typical way of teaching it. Growing up and still today I hear it from coaches that you have to attack the ball and give it a good long swipe at the ball. I don’t believe in that theory for one reason, I want to be in control. When you swipe it feels like a chance, if it bounces in your glove then you caught it if not then the runner is safe. I personally like to read the bounce and then attack or stay back. I believe that if you try and catch the ball then you have a better chance for an out. My advice is see the bounce then make your move, either stay back and play the longer easier bounce or attack and play the shorter bounce in the glove and try to never play the long in between bounce going forward. This can help all other infielders when a hitter hits a ball hard on a bounce, try not to play the ball by going to it but wait take a step back and see it and then react. Any questions, send them over. |
