6-12-08 Hitting tip
The tip for this entry is a hitting drill to help everybody stay on your back-side and let the ball come to you instead of going out to get the ball. I like to call it the bounce drill. For this drill you need a hard surface (preferably concrete, or hard turf), balls, and someone to throw to you. Just like taking batting practice set the area so the person throwing is protected with a screen. The thrower will bounce the ball off the ground about 8 to 15 feet in front of the hitter to get a strike bounce. You need a few practice throws to get the right bounce angle and height. You want the ball to bounce to about belt high at the hitters contact point. As for the hitter, the object is to hit everything up the middle or to the opposite field in a line drive. If you pull a grounder, your swing path and balance was off. If you stay back see the bounce let the ball come to you, then stay behind the ball and are able to hit a line drive back up the middle, then you did it right. Try to repeat that swing because it was a good one. It is a difficult drill to set up, and accomplish, but the rewards are great. I do this drill about four times a week to give me the right feel and balance I need for my times at the plate. Give it a try if you can. Let me know if you have any questions.
