08/25/10

SAN DIEGO -- The table-setters for the Padres certainly did their job against the D-backs on Wednesday.

The 1-2 combination at the top of the Padres order of David Eckstein and Miguel Tejada reached base seven times and scored six runs, lifting San Diego to a 9-3 victory in front 21,966 at PETCO Park.

The win, combined with the Giants' loss to the Reds, extended San Diego's lead over San Francisco in the National League West to 6 1/2 games.

Eckstein led off the first, third and fifth innings for San Diego with singles and would later come around to score each time. Tejada brought Eckstein home, along with himself, in the first when he launched a two-run homer into left-center field and later walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jerry Hairston Jr. as part of a four-run third inning.

Both Eckstein and Tejada would cross the plate for a third time when Adrian Gonzalez put the final touch on the night's offensive outburst when he blasted a three-run homer to right field in the fourth inning to give the the Padres a 9-2 advantage. It was Gonzalez's 156th long ball with San Diego, which ties him for second on the Padres' all-time home run list.

The Padres (76-49) blew the contest open in the third when they sent all nine men to the plate and scored four runs with the help of two errors.

The first miscue came when Stephen Drew bobbled a ground ball off the bat of Chase Headley, allowing Eckstein to cross home. Rusty Ryal was then charged with a throwing error Hairston's sac fly that allowed Ryan Ludwick and Headley to advance to second and third base. Yorvit Torrealba drove both home when he dropped a single into center field to extend San Diego's lead to 6-1.

Wade LeBlanc (8-11) allowed three runs -- two coming on a pair of home runs to right off the bat of Drew -- on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings and struck out seven.
Drew's first home run, a leadoff shot in the first inning, was originally ruled a double, but video replay helped overturn the play and awarded Drew the home run.
D-backs starter Joe Saunders (1-4) allowed nine runs (six earned) on eight hits over four innings. He struck out one and walked three.

San Diego's victory pushed its record against the D-backs at home this season to 8-0.
